The Utah Shakespeare Festival

The Utah Shakespeare Festival is one of the most popular and well-established cultural institutions in Utah. The festival has grown from a small group of actors performing on an outdoor stage in Cedar City to a professional theater company that performs throughout the state, with five venues in Salt Lake City and an annual audience of over 350,000.

The festival was founded in the early 1950s by Dr. Karl Davis and his wife Lois when they moved to Cedar City with their children and opened a bookstore called Shakespeare Expressions. The store’s success led them to open a second location that served as a venue for Shakespearean plays performed by local actors. Soon after opening this second location, Dr. Davis met Edward Packard (who would go on to write the popular Choose Your Own Adventure series) who helped him found the Utah Shakespeare Festival Association; Packard also wrote plays for the festival that were performed by the community members from around Southern Utah.

In 1957, Dr. Davis’ son Lowell became artistic director for the festival and began bringing professional actors from Los Angeles and New York City to perform at its outdoor amphitheater on Main Street in Cedar City; these performances were extremely popular with audiences throughout Southern Utah because they allowed them to experience live theater without having.

The Red Cliffs Desert Reserve

The Red Cliffs Desert Reserve is a conservation area located between St. George and Ivins, Utah. It is home to a variety of wildlife and is considered one of the most biodiverse areas in the southwestern United States.

The reserve was established in 2000 by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and is managed as a wilderness study area. The reserve is also part of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, which includes several BLM-managed areas in southern Utah.

The Red Cliffs Desert Reserve includes an expanse of sandstone cliffs that rise 150 feet above the Virgin River Valley. The area was named after John Doyle Lee, leader of the Mountain Meadows Massacre and founder of nearby Parowan City. Lee used to hide out at the base of these cliffs while on the run from law enforcement officials seeking his capture for his role in the mass murder at Mountain Meadows.
